Although young, he was able to help considerably on the home farm in the Wairarapa, and latterly had land of his own up the Wanganui River, where he had been residing. He left this country with the 9th Reinforcements, and was in Egypt for about a month before going to France, where he spent a year and a half in the trenches before his death. His company took part in the capture of La Basseville, where he was shot by a sniper on August 1st, 1917, while helping to consolidate the position. In any work which he undertook, either church, civil, or military, he was always conspicuous for his unselfish devotion to duty. At the time of his death he held the rank of corporal in the Wellington Regiment." (In Memoriam, 1914-1918 [Wanganui Collegiate School])Name spelled incorrectly as Rutherford on the Nominal Roll.
