His son writes: he was a despatch rider in the 27th Machine Gun Battalion and for a short time was with the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG). He was Mentioned in Despatches twice, 27 March 1944 and 6 April 1944.

His son also recounts the MiD. "Dad's unit had been on patrol in the desert and they stopped. They realized they had forgotten the maps. Being a despatch rider, he was sent back to retrieve the maps. On returning back here was slight sandstorm and he proceeded towards it. Presuming his own company was moving, as he got closer he realised it was a Rommels, German Panzer Division (tanks) on the move nearby.

He decided not to turn back (away from the tanks) and carried on riding through the middle of the Panzer Division. He managed to get through and immediately told his company the enemy strength nearby .They immediately took appropiate action."
