  • Son of Agnes (nee Pullar) and Samuel Bates. Brother of Annie Alfreda Bates who is named as his next of kin at embarkation.

    Two years secondary education in Balclutha.

    Jack was self-employed as a Milk Vendor in Balclutha before he enlisted.

    He entered Camp 29 November 1941.

    Returned to New Zealand aboard the President Coolidge, 7 August 1942; arriving in New Zealand 14 August 1942.

    After the war he moved to Paeroa where he worked as a shop keeper. As part of the Soldiers Rehabilitation scheme, he trained as a shoe and boot repairer and he later set up his own cobblers shop, repairing and selling shoes in Paeroa.

    He did not marry.

    Known as Jack. The Cenotaph database record has been compiled from work prepared by the researcher who consulted the service record and spoke with family. AWMM
