He gained his commission in the field, proving himself an able workshop officer, giving the NZ Army Service Corps the full benefit of civil training, experience and proficiency. During his period as a senior workshops officer in Italy, he was responsible for the maintenance of all the NZASC transport of the division and attached NZASC units. The period proved a hard strain on vehicles, heavy in milage, contending with bad roads, snow and mud, and it was due to a large extent to his skill, initiative and rive that vehicle maintenace was of the division, which has been no mean task, partiuclarly during the rapid advance from the River Sebio to Trieste. By devotion to his work, his untiring efforts, his continual cheerfulnees and encouragement to his officers and men, his example in the disregard of his personal safety, his outstandingability, the tanks and other vehicles of the divison had avaliable at all times more petrol than was actually used. With obstacles to be crossed and re-crossed, road congestion, mileage aggregating some quarter of a million, rain and mud problems, it would appear almost insurmountable but notwithstanding all this, his company deliever to the divison a daily average of 31694 gallons of petrol, all due to his outstanding leadership. He contributed in no small measure to the success of the division in the final overthrow of the enemy in Italy."
