  • My grandfather George McLaren (12/2419) was with the 1st Auckland Battalion in WW1, but was a lad from Goodwood, Palmerston, Otago.

He would have known James Sanderson before the war, both grew up in the same area. Both were in the 5th Reinforcements heading to Gallipoli, but with different battalions.

George mentions in his WW1 diary seeing James Sanderson in the Armentieres sector of the Western Front in June 1916.

"Tuesday 13th of June 1916 - Fatigue this morning, 3am 9am. Horrible wet weather. Met Jimmy Sanderson in sap today. Told me that Tom Wilson was killed". Tom Wilson (8/2765) of the 1st Otago Battalion would have been known to both men. George mentions seeing Tom Wilson when they were on the Gallipoli peninsular.

It's sad to see Jimmy Sanderson didn't survive the war either. May he rest in peace and be remembered.
