    • "Acting Sergeant Bicknell voluntarily entered the repack area of an ammunition depot during the fire on 25th July, 1942, and performed outstanding work without regard to personal safety. Considerably shaken by blast, and thrown to the ground on many occasions, he displayed great bravery throughout and was an inspiring example to all who were with him. He searched the area for possible casualties while explosions were constantly occurring, and splinters and debris flying in all directions."
