      'On 27 June 1942 Driver Burling showed great initiative, resource and personal courage in leading and navigating ambulance convoys from MINQAR QAIM, Egypt, to the main dressing station. The presence of the enemy forced him to turn from the track shown to him yet he still succeeded in bringing to safety a large number of wounded. He later returned to the Divisional area for further wounded, passing through country which was then being traversed by enemy patrols. During the break-through at night he was separated from the convoy but resourcefully found his way back to the Alamein Line. During the remainder of the campaign he consistently showed resource, initiative and complete disregard of personal safety.'. (Source: The National Archives.
