  • Son of Elizabeth and Henry Keane. Brother of Hilda.

Brothers Thomas and Norman paid their own passage to South Africa to enlist.

The newspaper report, Aucklanders in Lord Roberts' Light Horse, describes the brothers enlistment circumstances as [they] "certainly could not have passed the tests here, as they were under the height mentioned in the conditions, and were only fair horsemen.

Correspondence in the military files note he fell ill on the march to Koodrosrand Drift and was invalided back to Kimberley where he died. Since that time no trace of him could be found.

Two sons, brothers served in South Africa with the Imperial Forces in Roberts' Horse: Thomas Herbert Keane (2439) died of sickness and Norman Mitchell Keane (2464).

Named in military papers as Herbert N. Keane. BDM registration as Thomas Herbert Keane. Service number incorrectly transcribed as 2459 on cover of NZ military file; corrected to 2439 in the correspondence inside (Septrember 2011). The Military personnel file for Herbert N. Keane contains correspondence concerning the military service of both brothers - Thomas Herbert Keane (2459) and Norman Mitchell (2464). AWMM
