      31 December 1942 AWMM
'On 27 June 1942 at MINQAR QAIM, Egypt, an urgent message was received from D Company, 20 NZ Battalion, that one of the Ammunition Company vehicles transporting their personnel had been immobilised by enemy shellfire. Accompanied by a driver in the platoon’s light aid vehicle Sergeant Cleave left immediately to take whatever action was possible. He located the disabled truck and then with complete disregard for his own safety worked on the vehicle for approximately an hour, under intense enemy shellfire, supervising and assisting his driver to change the radiator and tyres. This devotion to duty undoubtedly saved the vehicle from being abandoned.'. (Source: The National Archives. Recommendation for Award for Cleave, Victor James. (Ref. WO 373/22/278). Military Medal.
