      London Gazette, 28 January 1918, p1405, Rec No 1705: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as a stretcher bearer during the operations against Passchendaele Ridge on 12th and 13th October 1917. This Rifleman tended and carried in wounded day and night without rest and with utter disregard for the enemy snipers, machine gun fire, and shelling. With the utmost bravery and cheerfulness he went again and again into the fire-swept zone, thereby saving many lives. He was eventually severely wounded. AWMM

  • Alfred Booker was the son of Benjamin and Caroline Booker, of Westown, New Plymouth, New Zealand.

    After his months spent in Reinforcement and Rest Camps Alfred Booker was sent back to the field in September 1917 as part of the 3 Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele).

    In October he received wounds to the neck. His injuries were severe and he was transferred to England, arriving in Brockenhurst by the end of October. (Church, p.78) AWMM
