  • Sixth child of Johann (John) and Lois Windleborn of Richmond, Nelson. Laurence's brother, Herman John (7/1160)

    His brother, Hyam John Melveen, also enlisted but the war ended before he was sent overseas.

    Transferred to 1 Battalion, New Zealand Field Artillery, 11 March 1916.

    Returned to New Zealand, 9 February 1918.

    Posted to Featherston Camp to train with mounted regiments.

    On 5 November 1918, the NCOs of 48 Mounted Regiment went on a three-day exercise with 44 Mounted Regiment in the Wairarapa. Wendelborn's group was acting as the "enemy". Upon returning to camp on 8 November 1918, he contracted influenza.

    Wendelborn's medals are on display at the Takaka Museum.
