  • Training at Trentham Camp from 3rd of October 1939 to 4 January 1940. Embarked for Egypt on the 5th January arriving on the 18th February 1940. Attached to the 20th Infantry Battalion. He was captured along with most of the battalion on 13th December 1941. As a Prisoner of War, Jack moved to Italy in January 1942 to PG 66 Capua Transit Camp, Naples near Mt. Vesuvius, the to Campo concentramento di prigionieri di guerra 52 (Campo 52), near Genoa. In December 1942 he was moved to Campo 57 near Udine, close to Yugoslavian border. When Italy surrended he was moved to Austria by the germans to Stalag XVIII-C, Markt Pongau. He was then moved to Bruck an der Mur and then back to Markt Pongau, where he was freed by American forces. He was flown back to the UK on 5th May 1945, and returned to New Zealand on the 2nd of September 1945. AWMM
