The Royal Naval Artillery Commander Campbell's Appointment. The following is extracted from The Press:

"One of the officers of the Royal Navy Artillery Division, the force which was created from the surplus ranks and ratings of the Navy, is Commander Victor L A. Campbell, R.N. who was appointed adjutant of the Drake Battalion. This battalion served with conspicuous bravery in the defence of Antwerp.

Commander Campbell, who is well known in Christchurch. was a member of Captain Scott's Antarctic Expedition. He was associated with Commander Evans, R.N., in the fitting out of the Terra Nova, a work which occupied many months, and required constant and careful supervision. Commander Campbell served as a navigating officer during the voyage from Cardiff to Lyttelton. and thence to the Antarctic. After the main party was landed at Cape Evans, the Terra Nova proceeded eastward along the Great Ice Barrier, with the party which, under Commander Campbell, was to be landed in King Edward VII. Land. Heavy ice blocked the Terra Nova, and the scheme had to be abandoned, and Commander Campbell and his party finally had to be landed at Cape Adare, where the winter was spent. In the following summer the party abandoned their hut and were landed by the Terra Nova further down the coast. They carried out some very valuable explorations in Victoria Land, but being unable to get round McMurdo Sound to join up with the main party, they were compelled to winter in an ice-cave, which they constructed under great difficulties. They suffered greatly from their enforced confinement of six months, but all survived, and in the following spring they managed to reach the main base at Cape Evans, where they learned of the disaster to the Polar party.

Commander Campbell, who was formerly an officer in the mercantile marine, entered the Navy as a supplementary sub-lieutenant in August. 1897, and was promoted lieutenant a year later. After serving a commission in the Vulcan on the Mediterranean Station, he was transferred, in May 1898, to the emergency list. On the return of the Antarctic Expedition to England, he was promoted commander with seniority of June 30th, 1918. With Commander W. M. Bruce. R.N.R.; Commander Campbell was appointed a manager in the service of the Spitsbergen Exploration Company, but on the outbreak of war they both volunteered for active service." AWMM
