  • Uncle Willie was my father’s uncle. He was a popular, handsome and charming boy and the family were devasted by his loss ( my grandmother Ivy was his sister). My father said that his grandmother (Rosetta) never recovered.
Willie was only about 22 when he went off to war and signed up very quickly from Oamaru with a group of friends. They thought it was a great adventure. He was sent to Gallipolli and was killed in Shrapnel Gully along with many others just days after landing. The casualties were so heavy that they are unsure of the exact day - they could only narrow it down to 36-30 April. His body was never recovered as casualties were so bad and it was so hot they had to be buried quickly.
