  • Husband of Nancy, father of five daughters.

Captain Thomas Harry Chudley, was born at Liverpool, and joined the Shaw, Savill Company as a junior officer in 1890. He was appointed Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) on 18 March 1896, promoted to Lieutenant on 4 January 1909 and finally Lieutenant Commander with seniority from 31 December 1916. His RNR service was contemporaneous with his Shaw Savill employment as was often the case with RNR officers.

His first command was that of the Maori, and later he successively was captain of the steamers Rangatira, Kia Ora (1907), and Pakeha (from 16 June 1911) until his appointment as marine superintendent of Shaw, Savill in May 1915, and held that position until his death in 1931.

His WW1 service was as master of the SS Pakeha and included voyages from New Zealand to England (Albert Docks), Las Palmas and Cape Town. Later SS Pakeha was to be deployed as a Troopship (HMNZT 65 and 82). AWMM
