Son of Captain Edward John Scott (Master Mariner) and Isabella Scott, of 8 Kingsview Road, Mount Eden, Auckland.

Three sons, brothers served in WW1: Arthur Tennyson Scott (12/243) kia; Robert Francis Coghill Scott (10/2482) died of wounds and Charles Edward Scott (57438) who returned home. Their brother inlaw Rupert Cyril Moore (44943) was also killed.

Educated at Auckland Grammar School.

Appointed Lieutenant with 6th Reinforcements on 12 August 1915

Auckland Grammar School Magazine Chronicle, Third Term 1917: "Captain Robert Francis Scott, who died of wounds after the action at Messines, was the son of the late Captain E.J. Scott and Mrs. Scott, of Kings View Road, Mt Eden. He came to us from Epsom School, and was in the Middle Third of 1904, and in the Lower Fourth of 1905. After leaving school he was employed in the Post Office Savings Bank at Auckland, and afterwards at New Plymouth. He held a commission in the Post and Telegraph Corps, and was formerly a member of the Highland Rifles. On the outbreak of war he was placed in charge of the cable on Muriwai Beach, where he remained until he joined the Expeditionary Force as Second Lieutenant, being promoted to a First Lieutenancy before leaving New Zealand. He saw service at Gallipoli, and was present at the Evacuation, and later in Egypt received his Captaincy. While serving on the Somme he was wounded, and mentioned in despatches, and was for a period acting-major. His brother Arthur left with the Main Body, and was wounded: and his remaining brother, C.E. Scott, is serving at the front." AWMM
