    • NEWZAD was the first formed unit sent to Vietnam. An Engineer unit (RNZE), it was deployed on 29 June 1964. NEWZAD was "Engineers" Royal New Zealand Engineers (RNZE). RNZEME is a different "corp". RNZE build/construct bridges/buildings/roads etc. They are known/rank as "Sappers". RNZEME repair vehicles/radios/weapons etc...They are known/rank as "Craftsmen". There were x33 RNZE (engineer/sappers), x2 RNZAMC (medics), x1 RNZAC (armoured corp) & x4 RNZEME (technicians/craftsmen) Total 40.     Vietnam Certificate of Achievement. (1965). The United States Military Assistance Command Vietnam.

    OC NEWZAD team deployed on 29 June 1964 into Thu Dau Mot, 32 km north of Saigon where team was based. Brighouse was appointed adviser to the Vietnamese District Engineer in Saigon until Nov 1964 when MACV took over this role. OC on the ground for the engineers was Lt Dennis O'Brien. AWMM
