    McLean's spelling is Tahana, not Tawana as above.
    Tawana is used in Taranaki Herald 31st March, but appears again in Taranaki Herald 7th April 1860 as Tahana.
    Following Nigel Prickettt, Donald McLean and Taranaki Herald (corrected) - perhaps the spelling here should be changed to Tahana.

    No evidence he is a "principal chief" other than a blanket assertion by an un-named journalist. Grayling (The War in Taranaki 1860/61 does not include him in his list of "Leading Chiefs" nor does Wellington Carrington in his list of "heads" of contingents (Taranaki Herald 7th April 1860) these are the two most informed contemporary writers. For my research I would very much like to know if there is any evidence of chiefly rank.
    Taranaki Herald may have been referring to all those killed in blanket terms as "principal chiefs" to allow the supposition that "many more men of no note" were also killed. There is no source or evidence other than that assertion as far as I know but I woud like to know if there is.

  • Tawana Ngeu, principal Taranaki chief, was reported as killed at Waireka, 28 March 1860 in The Taranaki Herald 'Journal of Events' dated 29 March 1860, published 31 March 1860.

    He is listed as Tahana Ngeu, a Taranaki chief killed, in The Taranaki Herald 7 April 1860, this list is given in an open letter written in Maori by Native Secretary Donald McLean, dated ‘Taranaki’, 4 April 1860. Prickett (2005), writing of the spelling differences, notes that McLean is likely to be correct because of his knowledge of Maori and he will have known some of the men.
