Grayling (1862:93; Fig. 3) names ‘leading chiefs’ killed as Taraia Te Ruru Takahi Kare – Taranaki. Grayling's information is described as being ‘…derived from native sources’ by G.W. Woon.

Prickett (2005) notes these are the only names not included in the Taranaki Herald list of 7 April 1860. He considers that ‘Taraia Te Ruru Takahi Kare’ is missing a cooma and that it is likely there are two men here, named ‘Taraia Te Ruru’ and ‘Takahi Kare’; and he has included them in the summary casualty list (Table 7) for future confirmation or correction.
