  • Hoani, a young chief, of Manawapou was reported as killed in The Taranaki Herald 1 September 1860 on information received from Ropata Ngarongomate. Ropata detailed that he wa was brought to the Poutoko burial ground for interment and his body was buried by Tamati Wiremu.

    From the end of July to early September there was skirmishing between troops based at Waireka Camp, on top of Waireka Hill, and Taranaki and Ngati Ruanui who had established stockades and rifle pits along the top of the Tapuae ridge now traversed by the main road (Prickett 1994:41–44).
