Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) AWMM
London Gazette 20th December 1945, "This officer, while a prisoner of war in German hands, was for 2 1/2 years Dental Officer at Stalag 838, where some 6000 British NCOs were confined. Until he arrived at this camp in December 1942 no proper facilities for dentistry existed. Capt. Crawford, by persistently importuning the German authorities, gradually accumulated sufficient material to improvise much of the apparatus he requried, the remainder being supplied by the Red Cross societies. As a result he was able to provide some 400 men with new dentures and repair as many, beside treating more than 7000 patients. It cannot be too strongly stressed that Capt. Crawford had to contend all the time with great obstructiveness on the part of the Germans, who did not consider that non-working NCOs should be provided with teeth. Capt. Crawford's dauntless energy and the devotion with which he practised his profession under difficult circumstances to the great benefit of his fellow prisoners of war is deserving of the highest praise." Pomeroy and Beattie, p. 78. AWMM
