  • "Shotter's army records reveal that he was transferred temporarily to different battalions during his remaining time in France. On 26 March he joined No.1 New Zealand Entrenching Battalion which had been sent to the Somme. A month later he was posted to the 2 Battalion, Wellington Infantry Regiment." (Church, p.221)

    4 November 1918 Shotter was wounded in action at the Battle of Le Quesnoy, receiving gunshot wounds to his right thigh. He was admitted to No.1 South African Hospital on 6 November and embarked on a hospital ship bound for England on Armistice Day, 11 November. He received medical attention at the Militray Hospital, Endell Street, London for six weeks before being transferred to No.1 NZGH, brockenhurst on 24 December. He died on 9 March 1919 as a result of his wounds. (Church, p.221)

    Shotter was the last NZEF soldier to die at Brockenhurst. AWMM
