  • On 6 July 1917 Sidford was posted to France and joined the 4 Battalion, 3 NZRB, 'A' Company on 9 August 1917 at Basseville.

    Sidford spent two months on the Front before being admitted to the hospital, suffering from scabies. Rejoined his unit 26 April 1918 in the Field near Hebuterne. After four months in action he was wounded on 29 August 1918 whilst fighting east of Favreuil in the Battle of Bapaume. Sidford received gunshot wounds to his back and chest, which resulted in paraplegia. He was transferred to No.1 NZGH, Brockenhurst where he survived another three and a half months.
