  • Daughter of Mary Grey and Thomas Francis Grey.

    Proceeded to France February 1917.

Elsie had tried to enlist earlier in the war however, the authorities said she should complete her qualifications first. After Elsie finished her training in 1915 she attempted re-enlist but was declined. Her uncle Charles Dovey who was Second in Charge at the New Zealand Stationary Hospital at Brockenhurst, invited to England to work with the Stationary Hospital. Along with her aunt Kate and a couple of other nurses they paid their own way to Britain to enlist. They sailed on the same ship as Prime Minister Massey and Sir Joseph Ward who were attending a conference in Britain. - From the family.

Elsie served alongside many of her family members including her brother Douglas Grey, Uncle Charles Dovey and Aunt Kate Dovey (VAD), as well as cousins Leslie Edmonson 41398, Grattan Grey 8/1105, Henry Ready 41997, Alan Wilkin 3/1371, Cleverley Wilkin 87536, George Wilkin M81933, Charles Grey and her brother in law Walter Stratford 10/256.
