Daughter of Clara Anne Florence Haultain and Arthur Robertson Theodore Haultain.

Sister Haultain was not on strength of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, nor for the Imperial Forces. She trained in the Royal Infirmary, Dundee, Scotland and when the war broke out she was appointed Charge Sister of the Deaconesses Hospital in Dundee. This hospital became a Military Hospital and whilst there she volunteered for nursing service in Europe. Her uncle advised her to visit New Zealand first and to see her mother before going to the Front and she did. In New Zealand she volunteered for service and was sent to Samoa to work at the Public Hospital. It was there she fell ill and on her way back to New Zealand her condition worsened and she died in Hospital in Suva, Fiji.

Sister Haultain's remains were brought to New Zealand and her family sought a military funeral. This was denied because her work in Samoa was in a "civil" capacity. Her family continued for many years to write to Defense in New Zealand to ask for military recognition of her service. These efforts were unsuccessful.

Her service during World War 1 is remembered on the Howick and Pakuranga War Memorial which was unveiled on 13 January 1921. The Howick RSA honours, with a researched speech, one of those named on the Howick and Pakuranga War Memorial every ANZAC Day. Haultain's service was remembered in 2008.
