  • Walter Gordon Balzer and Ellen Tuparehaki Hunt had 3 Sons Clarence Juna Victor Balzer Aubrey Huia Balzer Oswald Kenneth Balzer Oswald was killed at the Sangro in Italy. He lied about his age to go to war with his brothers and died in his first skirmish. Aubrey remained with the army in the territorial force after he came back from war and rose in rank to Hon. Colonel (LT COL) of the Hauraki Regiment. Clarence was injured during the war and Aubrey carried him from the front line to safety because he could not let his mother suffer the grief of losing another son. My grandmother knew at the time each incident happened that she had lost a son to death and that another had been injured. Both times she was guiding tourists around Whakarewarewa and had to sit for a time. She made lifelong friends with some of those American tourists as a result of their concern for her.
