  • Four children served in WW2. Two brothers served in Army. Robert John McCombe (056196) and Kenneth Maxwell McCombe (441188). Brother George Neville McCombe and sister Valerie Gladys McCombe served in RNZAF.

    Father Robert Cecil Lurgen Maxwell served in WW1 and in Home Guard in WW2.

    Posted to 4th Signal Section Trentham 1940.

    Attached to NZ Navy for three months in 1942.

    Sailed with advanced part 3 Division in September 1942 for

    New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, Vella Lavella. Landing with advance party in the attack on Nissan Island (Green Island). While on Green Island was attached to US Navy for three months providing Inter-force communications.

    Returned to NZ briefly before being posted to 6th Field Regiment Italy (in G. Section Signals). Discharged from Army February 1946.

    Re-enlisted with Territorial Force 1948 with NZ Corps of Signals. Rank was Warrant Officer II.

    Retired from Corps. January 1970.

    Served with armed forces in WW2 and the Territorials for 32 years. AWMM
