  • Husband of Dorothy Patricia (Pat), nee Coleman.

Ross was the middle of three sons who enlisted, his brothers John Mervyn Warnock NZ402231 and Donald William Warnock 229333 were both killed.

Ross was working as a fireman with the New Zealand Railways before enlistment.

After leaving school Ross worked in dairy farming, then as an office boy and shop assistant for the local (Woodville) Dairy Company. He had started studying accountancy at the time of enlistment.

Ross writing about his service and why he signed up wrote "all Railway employees received a letter from PM, Nash asking them to form a Railway Operating Company - 'good idea? " He answered, to the question how long had you been thinking about enlisting before you did? "not at all"

He wrote his worst moment in the war was that he got a heart flutter after a severe air raid; and his best moment was when he got over it. he writes a very amusing account of the time with the 16th ROC in the desert in the book Judd, B. (2003). The desert railway : the New Zealand Railway Group in North Africa.

Ross came home to Woodville on furlough expecting to be sent back and the servicemen were given a welcoming party by the community. Ross was selected to give the responding thank you speech. Whilst speaking he stopped completely loosing his train of thoughts for some moments. He later told his future wife who had witnessed this pause, that he saw his brother standing in the back of the hall. The family subsequently learnt that he had been killed.
