'Corporal Blackett was in charge of stretcher-bearers attached B Company, 22 NZ Battalion, during the attack on MITEIRIYA RIDGE, Egypt, on the night of 23-24 October 1942. During the progress of the attack he succeeded in collecting, attending to and evacuating the whole of the 20 wounded in the Company, as well as a number of wounded from other Companies. During the whole of this period he and his stretcher bearers were under extremely heavy shell and mortar fire and towards the end of the attack when tied down by fire it became necessary for him to dig in his remaining wounded until he could shift them. Throughout the attacks on the following days he did not spare himself in moving around under machine-gun fire to bring in further casualties and he carried out his work in a fearless manner. His example to his fellow stretcher-bearers was the undoubted cause of the outstanding work of this team.'. (Source: The National Archives. Recommendation for Award for Blackett, Frank Gofrey. (Ref.
