  • John Dennehy was born in Bournemouth, England on 13th February 1919. His father was in England during the First World War. However when his mother died ten days after John was born, his father returned to New Zealand with his four month old son. Prior to joining the army John Dennehy worked as a cadet at the Stores Branch with the New Zealand Post Office. John enlisted for the army in 1940 and served a total of 4 years and 123 days with the army. He fought in North Africa. When he returned from the war he gained employment again with the New Zealand Post Office, this time in the Property section, eventually becoming a Senior Supervisor. He retired in 1977, but returned to work in the Records section for a further four years. John Dennehy married Margaret-Mary McBride on 29th May 1954 in Greymouth. They went on to have five children i.e. Michael, Christine, Margaret-Mary, Denise and Pauline. They lived for a number of years at 49 Hataitai Road, Wellington, and then shifted to 549 Broadway, Strathmore, Wellington. John died at home on 16th November 1991, aged 72.
