MM. New Zealand Gazette. January 27 1944. p. 61 New Zealand Engineers, 23 Field Company. " For bravery in the field during the landing of the 8th Brigade Group on Treasury Islands on the 27 October 1943. Beaches were subject to very heavy shelling and mortar fire for about 5 hours after the intial landings had been made. This resulted in many casualties to personnel and damage to ships that were unloading. Sapper Duncan, during the whole of this time and with utter diresgard for his own personal safety, continued to operate his bulldozer on and in the close vicinity of these beaches in constructing the tracks vitally necessary for the expeditious unloading of ammunition, stores, and equipment. His fine example was very steadying on unloading and carrying parties. AWMM

'Activity on the beaches was frequently more intense than in the jungle. Sapper J. K. Duncan, of 23 Field Company, never left his bulldozer, but kept tracks open from the landing craft to the dump areas, despite exploding mortar bombs.' (Source: Gillespie, O.A. The Pacific. p. 151.) AWMM
