'Staff Sergeant Ashworth was senior NCO in an advanced dressing station during the retreat in June 1942, the fighting on the Alamein line and during the battles preceding the break-through at Miteirya Ridge and Tel el Eisa, Egypt. On all occasions he bore himself with courage, determination and unfailing cheerfulness. In dangerous positions he often nursed and dressed the wounded for several days at a stretch without rest. His fine qualities of character and leadership were an inspiration to his men under trying conditions. Staff Sergeant Ashworth served through all previous campaigns of the 2nd NZ Division and was wounded in Crete. When his dressing station was in enemy hands in Libya he showed great courage and determination in caring for and sheltering the wounded.'. (Source: The National Archives.
