    'During this attack, in order to give covering fire to his section, Private Bertie, 13 Platoon, crawled out to an exposed rock and with his Bren gun opened fire at close range. He received a bullet wound across his head but continued firing, killing two Germans though again wounded, this time through the shoulder, but still maintained his fire on the strongpoint until the section assaulted it. Until ordered to the RAP by his platoon commander, Bertie remained in position giving flank protection to the platoon. For his gallantry and devotion to duty he was awarded the Military Medal.'     • 'Private Bertie was a member or 13 Platoon, 25 NZ Battalion, at CASSINO, Italy, on 17-18 March 1944. On 17 March his platoon had lost contact with Company Headquarters and after one NCO had been killed and another wounded by sniper fire in trying to re-establish contact Private Bertie volunteered to do so. In face of accurate sniper fire he succeeded in locating the headquarters and returning to his platoon. On 18 March the platoon was attacking an enemy strong-point at the base of Point 193. In order to give effective covering fire to his section, Private Bertie crawled out to an exposed rock. From here he brought fire to bear at close range but received a severe bullet wound across his head. He continued firing, accounting for two enemy killed, and suffered a further wound in the shoulder. In spite of this he still engaged the strong-point with Bren fire until his section assaulted it. After the assaults he remained in position firing on and protecting the flank of his platoon until ordered by his Platoon Commander to the regimental aid post. During the previous three days fighting he had displayed the same coolness and disregard for danger and throughout the action had been an inspiration to the men of his platoon.'.
