  • Son of Gordon Roil Essendon and Vera Gwendoline Batty (nee Oxenham). Married Noeline Hazelwood 7 November 1942.

    Whilst serving in Egypt, Gordon developed Rheumatic Fever and Arthritis in his legs and arms and was returned to New Zealand by Australian Hospital Ship Wanganella. He spent a short time in Wellington Hospital, and was then transferred to the Soldier hospital in Rotorua for several months. AWMM
