    Recent casualty lists contain the name of Trooper Francis G Smith, reported to have been killed in action August 5. Trooper Smith was a son of G A Smith of Whakarau and he left Gisborne with the 8th Contingent. He was farming at Whakarau when he enlisted and was well known in that district.
