    'Killed just prior to Chunuk Bair on a reconnaissance mission and was shot in the stomach by machine gun fire. Managed to get back but died shortly afterwards. My father heard all this in the back of the car when Major (Later Colonel ) Herbert Hurst drove his father around Christchurch and they would talk about it - all three were on Gallipoli.'
