  • Son of James Joseph and Alice Spratt, of Onerahi, Whangarei.
    Birth name is registered as Walter John Spratt, he attested as Walter Spratt, family note his name is Walter Touho Spratt.

    Sons, brothers Walter Touho Spratt (10/854) was killed in action and Herbert Spratt (376) served with the AIF.

    In May 1916 the Onerahi Red Cross Society was formed. They proposed that a commemorative banner with the names of fallen Onerahi soldiers be worked in gold thread with the first name inscribed as Private Walter Spratt.

    Embarked Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 12 April 1915.
    Promoted sergeant, 3 May 1915.
    Wounded in action, 8 May 1915 (shrapnel/gun shot wound, head), and admitted to HS 'Braemar Castle'; transferred to St George's Hospital, Malta, 18 May 1915 (gun shot wound: slight); attached on strength, NZ Base Depot, Alexandria, 21 June 1915.
    Embarked Alexandria to rejoin Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, 3 July 1915; rejoined Bn, Anzac cove, 8 July 1915.
    Reported missing, 8 August 1915.
    Board of Enquiry, Moascar, 16 January 1916, concluded soldier 'now believed to be dead'.
