  • Obituary
Lieutenant R. H. Stables, who has died of wounds, was a resident of Auckland for about four years prior to enlisting. He was the son of a school-teacher, who was a resident of Auckland many years ago, but who subsequently resided in Napier and Dunedin. Lieutenant Stables also was a teacher for some time, but several years ago he left that profession and commenced journalistic work at Invercargill. He left the latter town to join the reporting staff of the Auckland Star. Shortly after the war broke out he spent his annual holiday in a hospital for the purpose of undergoing an operation necessary to make him fit for active service. Subsequently he enlisted in the sixteenth reinforcements. He obtained a commission in New Zealand and left with the twenty-second reinforcements as a second-lieutenant. He was married shortly before leaving the Dominion, his wife being a daughter of Captain J. Clarke, of Onehunga. (Auckland Weekly News, 1 November 1917, p. 22) AWMM
