  • James Steele was the son of George and Sarah Steele, of Auckland, New Zealand. Born at Christchurch, New Zealand. Served in the South African Campaign.

    Posted to 8th (South Canterbury) Squadron, Canterbury Mounted Rifles Regiment, Mudros, 3 October 1915.
    Disembarked Alexandria, Egypt, 26 December 1915.
    Admitted to New Zealand General Hospital, Cairo, 1 January 1916 (contusion, right knee); admitted to Aotea Convalescent Home, Heliopolis, 13 January 1916; discharged to Base Depot, Ghezirah, and then rejoined unit, Zeitoun, 17 January 1916.
    Transferred to 2nd Bn, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, Moascar, 11 March 1916.
    Embarked from Alexandria, Egypt, and proceeded overseas to France, 7 April 1916.
    Killed in action, 28 June 1916.
