Thomas Steel was the son of Jessie and Alexander Steel, of West Plains, Southland.

13 January 1916 - At Trentham Camp

7 April 1916 – At Featherston camp charged with overstaying leave. Case dismissed

6 May 1916 - Embarked from Wellington onboard HMNZT 53 – NZ Troopship, Navua. 12th Reinforcements, ‘H’ Company.

22 June 1916 – Disembarked Suez

26 July 1916 – Embarked for France on Steamship Ivernia.

7 August 1916 – Disembarked Southhampton, England to Sling Camp with ‘C’ Company, 5th Reserve Battalion.

28 August 1916 – Moved to France.

29 August 1916 – Attached to NZ training Battalion at Etaples

14 September 1916 – Joined 2nd Battalion Canterbury Infantry, 2nd Company in the field

16 September 1916 – Reported missing in action

18 September 1916 – Admitted to No 38 Casualty Clearing Station in Field. Wounded in Right shoulder

19 September 1916 – Died of wounds in No 38 CCS in field

Two sons were killed in WW1, brothers Thomas Robert Steel (13113) and John Steel (25/681)
