  • A week after arriving in Egypt William Steele boarded ship again, bound for France where he joined the 2 Battalion, Auckland Regiment.

    "William Steele contracted bronchitis in February 1918, which developed into pleurisy and was admitted to No.1 NZGH, Brockenhurst on 3 April. He died on 26 April from pleurisy pneumothorax." (Church, p.119)

    "The family suffered another tragedy as a result of the War. A brother, Private James George Steele, 7/1006, 2 Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, died on 28 June 1916. he is buried at the Cite Conjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France, Ref 11. B.6." (Church, p.119) AWMM
