  • While researching the Stevens family -who are distant cousins -I came across the name of William Ernest Stevens 1894-1917. William was an old boy of Auckland Grammar and was still only 23 when he was killed in action. He sailed in 1916 as a rifleman but had achieved commissioned rank. NZ lost so many of their best young men between 1914-18. I dont think we have fully recovered from that loss.
    Rest in peace William -you are still remembered.
