    • PRIVATE STEVENSON'S INJURY.
Particulars reached Gisborne to-day of the injury sustained by Private Claude Stevenson, a Gisborne boy, reported wounded early in June. Stevenson was one of the battalion snipers and was employed with .Lieut. Muir and Private Ovendon on a sniping post. A machine gun was turned on to them, and the officer told Stevenson to get back into the trench. He did so in a hurray and landed on top of a rifle with bayonet fixed. The .bayonet penetrated his leg just above the knee and went in up his leg, coming out a few inches below his hip. It: was not a serious wound, but one that will probably make the leg stiff for a long time. Public - Lorraine Mona - Researcher - 8 June 2023 - PRIVATE STEVENSON'S INJURY.

Private Claude Stevenson, of whose death in action his parents, Mr. . and Mrs. H. Stevenson, Valley road, Mangapapa, received official advice this morning. Private Stevenson, who was 20 years of age, left with the Sixthi Reinforcements, when only 18 years of age. At the time of enlisting he was employed in the Borough Council's fitting shop. Private Stevenson was accidentally wounded on Gallipoli in June last year. Lieut, Muir, Private Ovenden, and he were erecting a snipers post when the Turks opened on to them with a machine-gun. They jumped into a trench for shelter. Private Stevenson landed on a bayonet, which entered his leg above the knee and came out at the thigh. He was sent to hospital in England, where he spent five months, eventually recovering and rejoining his company. An elder brother, who left with the 19th Reinforcements, is also in France Public - Lorraine Mona - Researcher - 8 June 2023 - POVERTY BAY HERALD, VOLUME XLIV, ISSUE 14329, 20 JUNE 1917, PAGE 3
