Son of John & Emily Talbot - of 'Woodlands' Temuka, Canterbury.
Brother of Private Basil H. Talbot : NZEF Service # 6/1734 of the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 3rd Reinforcements, NZEF who was killed in action - 7 August 1915 - at Chunuk Bair, Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey (aged 22 years).
Also brother of eminent New Zealand ENT Surgeon Leonard Smith Talbot (1880-1961).
Arthur Talbot was a well known New Zealand mountaineer and alpine explorer. He was a member of many New Zealand alpine expeditions which made first ascents (Mount Murchison 1913). In 1910 together with fellow mountaineer & alpine explorer William Graves, of Oamaru, Arthur Talbot discovered a direct alpine route from Milford to Wakatipu. This was later named Graves-Talbot Pass. After the death of Lieutenant Arthur Talbot - at Passchendaele on 12 October 1917 - a mountain in the Hollyford Valley, South Island, was named for him - 'Mount Talbot'.
Prior to enlistment for war service Arthur Talbot was a school teacher at Greymouth High School, Westland, South Island.
After enlistment for war service he married. His wife Olivia Anne Talbot gave birth to a daughter after Arthur had left New Zealand for overseas war service. Arthur would not survive war service to see his daughter.
