  • George Taylor was the eldest son of William and Bessie Taylor, of Raglan.

    Husband of Dorothy Lethbridge Taylor.

"Enlisted at Hamilton in May, 1917. He gained his stripes at Trentham, and sailed from New Zealand with the 28th Reinforcements in July. On arrival in England he was willing to forego the rank of Sergeant in order to get over to France a little earlier. He left in six weeks, and died of wounds received on December 7th, 1917, while out on a wiring party, two of whom were killed outright by machine gun fire. He fell, shot through the body, and only lived a few hours, being buried at the little cemetery of Ecole, near Ypres. Prior to his departure he had been farming in the Waikato district." • George Barnard Russell Taylor was my grandfather. I hope to visit his grave at Menin Gate later this year, also that of his brother Charles Brian Taylor, my grand-uncle, who was killed the day after his 21st birthday.
