  • Mikaera Te Moananui was the son of Tihitapu Te Moananui, of Paeroa, New Zealand.

There is a description of a funeral en route to Egypt when a Maori soldier was buried at sea, in the letters of Trooper R.J. Newton, copies of which are held in the Museum Library. It seems likely that this was the funeral of Mikaera Te Moananui. The soldier who died was travelling on the Warrimoo. Four ships came to a halt whilst the funeral took place, sounding the last post, before carrying on their journey.

Promoted to corporal, 21 November 1914.
Embarked from Auckland on board HMNZT 'Warrimoo', 10 February 1915; disembarked, Wellington, 13 February 1915; re-embarked on board HMNZT 'Warrimoo' and proceeded overseas, 15 February 1915. Admitted to hospital, 23 February 1915 (pneumonia); died 6 March 1915 and buried at sea the following day.
'I beg to report that No. 16/477 Corporal Mikaera Te Moananui, of the New Zealand Maori Contingent, died of pneumonia at 8:30pm on the 6th instant, in Lattitude 7.37 South, Longitude 92.47 East. This NCO was admitted to hospital on the 23rd ultimo, suffering from pneumonia. The amount of pay due to Corporal Te Moananui at the time of his death was two pounds, 15 shillings and nine pence plus one pound which he had handed to his Company Commander for safe custody, and which has now been returned to the paymaster.
I have written to his father, Tihitepu Te Moananui, of Paeroa, Auckland, advising him of his death.'

CORPORAL # 16/477 MIKAERA TE MOANANUI
    UNVEILING MONUMENT
    TO THE MEMORY OF
    CORPORAL MIKAERA TE MOANANUI.
    INTERESTING CEREMONY,
An unveiling ceremony took place on Christmas Day at Taharua meeting house on Te Aroha Road, Paeroa, where a large crowd assembled. Mr G. Wickliffe, in a neat speech, welcomed those present. He said they had tnat day gathered together to unveil a monument to the memory of the late Corporal Mikaera Te Moananui (grandson of the late Meha Te Moananui), who died at sea while on his way to fight the Germans.
The ceremony took place at three o’clock.
Te Tihitapu Te Moananui, father of the deceased soldier, unveiling the memorial. The monument, made by Parkinson, of Auckland, is a fine piece of workmanship. The inscription in English on one side and in Maori on another, was:
    "In loving memory
by the people of his tribe
for this lad, who died at sea
on the 6th day of March, in the year 1915
on his way to fight against Germany.
He is a Chief of his Tribe.
    His name is
    MIKAERA TE MOANANUI
    aged 23.

Two enlarged photographs of the late Corporal Mikaera Te Moananui were placed on the monument, one in uniform and the other in his civilian clothes. The service was conducted by a Native lay reader, Mr Himiona Herawani, and consisted of the Maori translation of the hymn "For Ever with the Lord," the Lord's Prayer, followed by the collect for All Saint's Day. After the ceremony refreshments, supplied by the natives, were partaken of.
