  • Son of Henry, a sheepfarmer, and Emily Brettargh (née Oldham), of 45 Wickstead Street, Wanganui.

    "Was among the first to volunteer for service, and left with the Wellington Infantry Regiment in the Main Expeditionary Force. After spending several months in Egypt, where he had the choice of remaining some time longer had he wished, he left for Gallipoli, and was appointed to the Headquarters Staff. During the three months he was on the Peninsula, he saw much fighting before he fell in action on August 8th, 1915. In 1909, the year he left school, he was in the XI."
