    Husband of Elizabeth nee Haliday m 1894; father of John and Mary.

    Rifleman Todd was one of the first six members of the Rifle Brigade to be killed in Egypt (Austin, 1924).

    Text of the family grave memorial, Purewa Cemetery: "In Loving memory of Rifleman J.M. Todd No. 23/626 8th Platoon B Company 1st Battalion Earl Liverpools own. Beloved husband of E.Todd (Arney St, Newton) who was killed in action Egypt on Christmas Day 1915 during an engagement with the Senussi aged 51 years (Born at East Taieri Dunedin). Only the grave of a hero on the other side of the hill, overlooking the harbour of Matruh he faced the enemy like a warrior.

    He gave his live for us. Only goodnight beloved not farewell."

    Listed at Archives New Zealand as John Mathew Todd. The name Matthew is spelled variously on the service record, but in BDM (marriages) is Matthew. His age and date of birth are inconsistent on the records - 39 years on themedical check - and 51 years on the family memorial.
