Deci was my mother's father and they never got to meet each other. My primary feeling is that his death, by sniper, was just one of thousands of tragically unnecessary deaths in a war of enormous waste. The 'Glorious Dead' legend on the cenotaph feels very inappropriate given what we know about it all now - Gallipoli, Passchendaele et al ... Nothing glorious about all that at all.
