  • William Bridge was born Hokianga, the son of William Henry and Alice Gertrude Bridge, second eldest of 6, school Otaua School at Punakitere and briefly Waimamaku School.

    Attended Auckland Grammar school 1911, 1912.

    The parents as next of kin address is given as 39 Disraeli Street, Mount Eden, Auckland, New Zealand.

    Returned to Hokianga after schooling working as storekeeper at Kohukohu.

    He wrote home during the War urging his younger brother, George, not to come over " that it was a hell hole". George did join, attesting, unbeknown to him, the very day his brother Henry was killed.

    William was killed at Passchendaele.

  • At 5.30am on a bitterly cold wet Friday, 12 October 1917, Henry Bridge, C Company, 2 Battalion NZRB was in the first wave to go over the top at Passchendaele. Only a few short hours later, possibly somewhere in the vicinity of Wolf Farm or Wolf Copse his short life came to an abrupt end.
